Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a distant cousin of Theodore Roosevelt who grew up in Hyde Park, New York. In his youth he learned to sail, hunt, and ride horses. He also developed a lifelong commitment to conservation and a love of rural America. He went to school at Harvard and Columbia Law School, but while he was at Harvard, he became friends with Theodore Roosevelt's niece Eleanor, who he later married. With a great personality like his it seemed like he was made for politics. With his reputation increasing and going from the New York State Senate to assistant secretary of the navy in the Wilson administration, he lost the election for becoming vice president of the Democratic ticket. After that is when he caught the paralyzing disease known as polio . Even though there was no cure he refused to give up. He began an exercise program that would help him restore his muscle control and eventually, he reached the point to where he would wear heavy steel braces on his legs that would allow him to short distances by leaning on a cane and someone's arm and swinging his leg forward from his hip(I have no idea how that works out). While he was suffering from polio his presence in the democratic party was decreasing but by the mid-1920's he was back in action. He became the governor of New York and with his life as an inspirational icon he grew popular and eventually became president in 1932. He went on to play a very important role in World War ll after getting the United States of of the Great Depression. He unfortunately died before the defeat of Germany. On April 12, 1945, while vacationing in Warm Springs, Georgia, he died of a stroke. He was succeeded by Vice President Harry S. Truman.
